Levantine farmers demonstrate in Madrid to request water infrastructure and in defense of “the garden of Europe”
More than 15,000 farmers, irrigators, field workers, companies, citizens of Murcia, Almeria and Alicante, agglutinated in El Circulo del Agua, are demonstrating today, in Madrid, in demand for water and water infrastructure for the Levant, and in defense of its productive sector, based on the so-called "Huerta de Europa", key in the social and economic fabric of these regions. Under the slogan "In the Levant, without water: desert and unemployment Defend the garden of Europe!, the demonstration will begin at 12 noon on Calle Alcalá and will arrive at 13.30 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, where there will be a concentration that will conclude at 14.30. In parallel, also today, in the Plaza del Callao in Madrid, 25,000 kilos of fruit and vegetables will be distributed, from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Giropoma Costa Brava S.L. accounts for a production close to 30,000 tons of apple protected by the PGI Manzana de Girona
The company Giropoma Costa Brava S.L. has accounted for this season an apple production protected by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Manzana de Girona near 30,000 tons, and will be kept entirely in the facilities that this company has in Ullà (Girona). The varieties that are being collected and which are included in the IGP are Royal Gala, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious and Granny Smith. Fuji will be the next variety in being recolected and the harvest will finish with the Cripps Pink variety, which is marketed under the Pink Lady brand.
Board warns the Government that if it closes the transfer of the Negratín will harm the agriculture of the Bajo Almanzora
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development Minister, Rodrigo Sánchez Haro, has called on the central government to offer guarantees that it will not close the Negratín-Almanzora transfer as of August, as farmers in the Bajo Almanzora region fear. This cut in supply would be an "enormous loss" for the more than 24,000 hectares of crops and 10,000 irrigators (citrus, horticultural and some greenhouses) in this area of the province of Almeria, which depend on a 70 % of the waters of this transfer.
Apples Val Venosta expects to double its ecological growing area by 2020
The Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of the Valle Venosta (VI.P) is planning for the coming years an important growth strategy, based on one of its main values, respect for the environment. The Val Venosta VI.P-Manzanas, through its line BIO Val Venosta - which has positioned it among the first producers of organic apple in Europe, and since the market is dynamic and with a strong demand for organic product, will increase its organic production area by 50%, from its current 500 hectares to around 800 in 2020. A significant increase that will help confirm its European leadership.
