Spain will ask the EC for the advance of 70% of the CAP aid, as a measure to mitigate the effects of drought
Spain will request the European Commission to advance 70% of the payment of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) aid, so that the Autonomous Communities that so wish can pay them from October 16th, as has advanced the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, at the entrance of the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union, held on 12th June in Luxembourg.
This request is in addition to the significant number of measures being taken by the Government to alleviate the situation of drought-affected farms, including aid for agricultural financing, fiscal measures and the adoption of a Royal Decree for the exemption of the canons to watersheds that are in an alert or emergency situation (Júcar, Segura and Duero), as well as a deferral of payments to Social Security.
These initiatives are in addition to the agricultural insurance policy promoted by the Ministry, which includes the financing of some of the modules up to the maximum allowed by the European Union. The minister also cited the aid of the Common Agricultural Policy, which in Spain guarantees on average 30% of agricultural income.
García Tejerina stressed the importance that the Ministry grants to organic farming, so it works on a plan to relaunch this type of production in Spain
García Tejerina has appreciated the high demands of organic production in our country and has informed that Spain will support the progress in the negotiation of the EC organic farming regulation, to see it soon approved, in order to ensure that any organic product from third parties Countries must meet the same requirements as those required for those produced in the EU.
The Minister pointed out that Spain would have liked the EU regulation of organic farming to be more ambitious, since our country has great controls and guarantees on this system of production
Nevertheless, she has assured that Spain will facilitate the development of the debates so that the regulation sees soon the light.
