Proexport to Host Fruit Attraction Conference on Lettuce
The Association of Producers-Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables of the Region of Murcia (Proexport) will celebrate on 18th October, in the framework of Fruit Attraction 2017, an event to be held from 18th to 20th October in Madrid, a conference on Lettuce, with the participation of the most important producers of this leafy vegetable worldwide.
Under the title “Lettuce Attraction: the world of leafy vegetables”, this conference will take place in pavilion 5 of Ifema (Fruit Forum / 16.00 hours), and it will meet all those professionals related to the world of lettuce and leafy vegetables, with the aim of addressing the latest trends and challenges before a product considered as the queen of salads.
The conference will feature international speakers and is aimed at producers, exporters, importers, retailers, researchers, seed companies, food processors, cooks and specialized journalists

Spain, leader in exports
Spain, with a total of 743,130 tonnes exported in 2016, is the world’s leading lettuce exporter and its production reaches 53 countries
Of the total exported lettuce, 60.4% (449,428tm) correspond to iceberg lettuce mainly, while the remaining 39,6% (293,702tm) corresponds to other types (Roman, oak leaf, lollos, gem …)
The majority of Spanish exports originate in the Region of Murcia, from which 71% of lettuce (527,423 tonnes in 2016)
Together with Murcia, Almería (142.894tm), Valencia (24.532tm) and Alicante (14.528tm) make up in the southeast of Spain the main producing area of lettuce and leafy vegetables in Europe.
The main destination of exports of Spanish lettuce is Germany, which receives 186,760tm, which represents 25.13% of the total. The second recipient country for lettuce from Spain is France, with 18.5% of the total (137.454tm) and third is the United Kingdom with 118,693tm (15.97%).
In terms of production, Spain is in fourth place worldwide and exceeds 900,000 tonnes of lettuce
