ALAS calls on the Socialist Group in Congress to take the scientific approach to its decisions on glyphosate
Representatives of ALAS (Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture) met on April 6th with Felipe Sicilia, spokesman for Agriculture of the PSOE in the Congress of Deputies, to request the agreement of their Group with the importance of giving precedence to scientific criteria when deciding about the extension of the authorization of the use of glyphosate, showing, thus, its commitment to the Spanish field and with the scientific criteria that have always guided its decisions regarding the tools for the sustainability of the European agricultural model.
In the meeting held, ALAS has also expressed the need for this scientific criterion to prevail in national, regional and municipal institutions, and has asked Felipe Sicilia to extend it to the autonomous and municipal bodies of the PSOE to avoid “being dragged by the fear approaches “driven by certain ideological movements that systematically ignore the favorable opinions of European regulatory authorities on the proven safety of glyphosate”.
ALAS has pointed out that “only the scientific criteria, which are those employed by the European Chemicals Agency and the European Food Safety Authority, have repeatedly and repeatedly endorsed the safety of glyphosate according to its Specifications of use, should guide decisions on this active substance”.
For its part, the PSOE agriculture spokesman showed full support for defending the scientific criteria when deciding on the extension of the authorization of glyphosate.
Sicilia has shown its solidarity and understanding on the problems and repercussions in the agricultural sector before a hypothetical prohibition of glyphosate based on ideological and non-scientific principles
