Thousands of farmers “take” the city of Murcia claiming a solution for the Mar Menor
Thousands of farmers, more than 400 tractors and hundreds of trucks keep a demonstration in the capital of Murcia on Wednesday, April 5th in demand of a solution for the Mar Menor that allows them to continue producing food sustainably in the region of Campo de Cartagena. After 24 hours of peaceful concentration, protesters have called for the commitment of the Agriculture Minister, Isabel García Tejerina, to go to Murcia to meet with them to “immediately” find a solution to their situation.
The protagonists of this tractor mobilization confess “fed up with waiting, after months of inaction and abandonment by the central government“, which has moved them to “take peacefully” the streets of Murcia, in a rally convened by the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam), the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattlemen (Coag), the Agrarian Youth Farmers Association (ASAJA), the Union of Small Farmers (UPA) and the Association of Producers-Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables of the Region of Murcia (Proexport), along with organizations such as the Pact Platform for the Mar Menor, Ecologists in Action, the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (Anse), the Fishermen Guild and the neighbors of the Campo de Cartagena area.
The protesters have demanded the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Isabel García Tejerina, or in their absence, of some high government position in water, to seek a joint solution to the problem of agriculture and water in the Campo de Cartagena , Next to the Mar Menor.
Given the lack of commitment, they have decided, spontaneously, to extend the concentration “indefinitely”, blocking the traffic of the city of Murcia. “We only ask that they commit themselves to come here and sit down with us to talk about everything that needs to be done with the Campo de Cartagena, so that the necessary infrastructures can be made and we can continue with our work.”
“We need infrastructure, facilities … The farmers are willing to finance it, but the government – which is competent in matters of water – must come to Murcia and sit with us.”
They assure that they will remain in the streets until they receive a clear message from the Ministry of Agriculture to constitute a commission of negotiation and work and definitively solve the situation of agriculture and the Mar Menor
