The Summer, better with dairy
With summer just around the corner, the National Federation of Dairy Industries (FeNIL) develops a number of useful recommendations to the tackling the rigors summer, already have been felt in some parts of the Spanish geography.
Coinciding with heat, sun and vacations we tend to neglect an important aspect of our life: nutrition. During the summer period it is essential to continue leading a healthy diet, with an emphasis on hydration and recover the vitamins and minerals we lose by sweating. Therefore, consuming milk and other dairy products in summer is the best way to maintain a healthy diet also at this time of year.
Milk and dairy products are a very complete food that we provide through one shot, part of the nutrients our body needs every day. The ‘White Paper Milk’, published by the National Federation of Dairy Industries in 2014, collects data from numerous studies that show how beneficial are dairy products, including milk, as they cover the needs of hydration, energy and nutrition to which we must pay special attention in the summer. The publication notes that an adult should consume 2 to 4 servings of dairy.
The top five reasons to consume dairy in summer:
1. Hydrate. During the summer months, due to sweating, we lose a significant amount of water from the body, plus many minerals necessary for our routine activities. Milk contains between 88 and 91 grams of water per 100 grams and also is a source of vitamins, such as A, D and E, and minerals such as calcium or magnesium, among others.
2. Get a healthy tan. Milk and cheese, butter or yoghurt containing two vitamins to process tanning: vitamin D and E. The first of these reacts to sun exposure skin protecting and facilitating the absorption of calcium by the bones. The second, vitamin E, promotes the regenerative capacity of the skin, decreasing the rate of peeling it and helping us to preserve the tan for longer in the summer.
3. Hold the line in summer. Dairy products are a few foods that contain a high concentration of calcium and protein, properties that have a satiating effect and help avoid snacking between meals. In addition, as reported by ‘White Paper Milk’ there is a close relationship between the consumption of calcium and the regulation of body fat.
4. Sleep. The night heat prevents many people sleep in summer. Therefore, a glass of milk before bedtime is a home remedy that helps you sleep and is available to everyone. Milk and dairy products contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid that promotes the release of serotonin and helps regulate sleep, so vital to our everyday lives.
5. Wide variety of products. Dairy products are foods that can be found in multiple forms -yogures, curd, cheese forms, among others, and which are the basis of a large number of recipes. We have a wide range of products that allows us to enjoy and to care for ourselves.
