Peru: Pro Olivo creates a management group to promote innovation within the olive sector
The Pro Olivo Association, which is made up of Peruvian olive processing and exporting olive and table processing companies, has recently created the Management Group of the Olive Innovation System, whose main purpose is to promote innovation within the olive sector. The establishment of this Management Group has been possible thanks to the support of the INNOVATE PERU Ministerial Program and once the Pro Olivo Association has successfully concluded the “Technological Innovation Agenda for the Technical and Commercial Development of the Olive Tree”.
The Management Group of the Olive Innovation System will coordinate and follow up on the implementation of the Road Map of the Peruvian olive sector
The Ministry of Production, through the National Innovation Program for Competitiveness and Productivity, INNOVATE PERÚ, has financed the studies of Diagnosis, Identification of Technological Challenges and Detection of Opportunities for the olive sector, which served as the basis for the elaboration of the Technological Innovation Agenda of the sector. This work counts on the active participation of the academic, private and State sectors.
The president of Pro Olivo, Manuel Morales, points out that in the commercial field, the Technological Challenge Identification Study recommends betting on Innovation, Research and Development, in diversifying the international markets, which are currently reached with table olives and oil made of olives. As well, develop new varieties, design new presentations and strengthen commercial intelligence.
Despite the varied challenges posed by the development of the olive sector, in 2017 progress has been made in the goals of improving competitiveness at the international level.
Between January and July, a total of 9,500 tonnes of table olives and 600 tonnes of olive oil were exported, of which a total of 131 tonnes were exported between green and black olives to non-traditional markets such as France, England, the Netherlands and Italy
In addition, a total of 48 tonnes of olive oil has been exported to a new market such as Panama, which could be the gateway to Central America.
