Cuna de Platero initiates the sustainable cultivation of strawberry in Ávila to be able to serve berries all the year
The Moguereña Cuna de Platero cooperative has started sustainable strawberry cultivation in Avila in order to offer a constant supply of berries throughout the year, as it will be able to have fresh strawberries from June to October, developing its concept “Your Global Berry Partner”. The company has five hectares of cultivation in Castilla y León in which it applies the same sustainability criteria as in Huelva.
The Moguereña Cuna de Platero cooperative has begun work on strawberry planting in the province of Avila (Castile and Leon) to be able to offer berries throughout the year. The entity has put into operation five hectares of land in which it is currently carrying out preparation and adjustment tasks and then planting the first strawberries.
These plants will begin to bear fruit in the months of June to October. “This allows us to extend the strawberry campaign, which in Huelva, due to the high temperatures, ends on the month of May”, explained the general director of Cuna de Platero, Juan Báñez. The cooperative develops the concept “Your Global Berry Partner”, a slogan that accompanies your brand.
It is, therefore, one more step to be able to offer berries to the consumer throughout the year, something that already happens with raspberry Adelita, Cuna de Platero marketed under its premium brand Berrycatessen.
Juan Báñez: “The temperatures of Ávila in summer are not as harsh as those of Huelva, which allows us to continue producing fresh fruit of the highest quality and to attend to our customers also during these months, improving our service and closing almost the annual cycle”
Adequacy Tasks
The company is preparing the ground, aligning and placing the arches in which the greenhouses will go. “The work we will do there will be the same as we have been doing in Huelva, marked by sustainability and respect for the environment in which we produce, obtaining a natural fruit and with flavor”, said the general director of this cooperative.
To minimize its environmental footprint Platero’s Cuna has implemented programs such as Bayer’s Food Chain Partnership in 100% of its hectares of strawberries, which has allowed it to offer a more natural, safe and healthy fruit
Another initiative of interest oriented towards greater sustainability of its crops is the Innocent Drink project, implemented with the University of Córdoba (UCO) and has allowed to measure and control irrigation, betting on water saving, obtaining an average reduction of 18%.
