Turkish hazelnut producers have received $ 500 million from the export of 192 151 tonnes of hazelnuts between 2014 and 2015.

Turkish hazelnut producers have received $ 500 million from the export of 192 151 tonnes of hazelnuts between 2014 and 2015, according to the Exporters Association of Hazelnut and Products Black Sea.

Turkish hazelnuts are mainly exported to EU countries throughout the season, which began on September 1, 2014 and ended in May 2015.

Hazelnut producers sold almost 40,000 tonnes of hazelnuts in that period, but even so, the country earned more thanks to the high value of the dollar and the high price of nuts.

Edip Sevinc, the president of the association, said prices have soared after the harvest in Turkey was affected by bad weather in March and April last year.

“The frost affected areas producing hazelnuts in the Black Sea in Turkey, in March and April, triggering a low volume of production last year and raise prices due to the shortage,” explained from the association .

The price of a kilo of roasted hazelnuts with double reached 100 Turkish liras ($ 40) in February.

Turkish hazelnut producers exported 232 129 tons of hazelnuts with 1,680 million entered during the season last year. Earnings from exports were 2,300 million in 2014.

Turkey is the largest producer of hazelnuts in the world and its production accounts for about 70 percent of world supply.
