The Spanish MEPs denounce the defamatory campaign of French winegrowers against Spain
Spanish socialists in the European Parliament have urged urgent measures to be taken to defend Spanish wine in order to counteract the effects of an advertising campaign launched by French farmers with a clearly defamatory aim and which, in its view, “represents a infringement of the single market and of the EU’s competition rules”.
Spanish socialists in the European Parliament have alerted the European Commission to the advertising campaign launched by French winegrowers in the Montpellier region against Spanish wine.
The Gallic farmers denounce an alleged deception in the labeling of Spanish and European wines that go on sale with brand names that would make them appear French
In a question to the European Commission signed by the delegation as a whole, the Socialists denounce this “new attack” on Spanish products by French farmers and demand that the EU determine the legality of the advertising strategy and take measures to respect. They argue that this campaign represents “not only a breakdown of the rule of law but also a violation of the single market”.
They also remind the Commission that this action is in addition to the numerous attacks which in recent months have been made by producers in the south of France against Spanish wine, who have destroyed dozens of bottles of wine from Spain and wich MEP and vice-president of the Agriculture Committee, Clara Aguilera has described as “unacceptable”. “The EU must act in defense of the rights of the Spanish sector and the rules of competition and single market that French farmers are systematically breaking,” said the MEP.
