The EU and the Member States, together with Switzerland, agree on a framework for cooperation with Bolivia worth 530 million euros
The European Commission, the member states present in Bolivia – France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Germany – and Switzerland have agreed to “harmonize and coordinate” their interventions in the field of development cooperation in the Andean country through the adoption of of a joint strategy until 2020 for which they will allocate a total of 530 million euros.
Under this Strategy, the EU, its Member States present in Bolivia (France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Germany) and Switzerland have agreed to harmonize and coordinate their interventions in development cooperation, in order to strengthen their impact, reduce fragmentation and increase the effectiveness of its contribution to the development of Bolivia. This Strategy is a good example of joint EU programming in third countries, in line with the new European Consensus on Development, adopted last year.
Prior to the visit, Commissioner Mimica stated the following: “The EU’s collaboration with Bolivia is stronger than ever, as evidenced by the launch of the first joint European Strategy for Bolivia worth 530 million euros, which We have developed in close cooperation with the Bolivian Government. This Strategy aims to create a common framework for EU development cooperation in Bolivia, in line with the principle of aid effectiveness and the European Consensus on Development. This Joint Strategy will contribute to a true European development policy. “
The Joint European Strategy seeks to improve the life of the Bolivian people in eight priority sectors, namely: culture and tourism, rural development and food security, comprehensive development with coca and the fight against drug trafficking, education, governance, the environment and climate change, health, and economic development and employment.
During his stay, Commissioner Mimica will also visit, together with Bolivian President Evo Morales, projects in the province of Chapare focused on integral development (cooperative of packaging of bananas and aquaculture) and in the fight against illegal drugs. The EU has contributed 52 million euros for the integral development and food security in the country during the last five years.
