Spanish olive oil expands around the world
By Juan Herrera
Olive oil ‘made in Spain’ does not need presentation. Just look at the lists of the best oils in the world, covered by Spanish brands, to realize that we are the true reference worldwide. The green gold produced in our country continues to cross borders and is known in every corner of the planet. Not in vain, exports continue to grow and each campaign closes with record numbers. The traditional shipments to European countries have been adding forcefully in recent years sales to markets with huge potential such as China, the United States and Australia, as well as Brazil, Mexico, Japan or Russia, among others.
To give an example, in China, although olive oil is still a fat little used when compared to palm, coconut or soy, it is slowly opening its way. Not in vain, 15 years ago, Chinese imports of domestic oil barely exceeded 150 tons; Now, the figure reaches almost 30,000, accounting for more than 80% of the total imports of olive oil from the Asian giant.
But this success is not accidental; behind it is the good work of the producing and marketing companies, who knew how to give a step ahead and contribute, through the brand, an added value to a product that was once marketed in bulk; A fact that obstructed the access to consumers who linked olive juice to Italy, which knew how to see the business much earlier and bottled in its country the oil from Spain that it bought in bulk.
Now everything has changed, the sector has become professionalized, and this, moreover, has been accompanied by the work carried out by the Olive Oil Interprofessional, which since its implementation has had as its main objective to consolidate the world leadership of the Spanish olive oil in production, quality and international trade
And it has done so through its promotional campaigns. One of the most powerful has been the recent ‘Born in Spain, admired in the world’, which, with the Ministry of Agriculture, has toured the countries with greater projection for Spanish oil, such as the United States, China or Australia. In the United States, for the celebration of the Taste of Tennis NYC (an event that combines gastronomy and sport) with great tennis legends, the 20 best chefs of the New York’s gastronomic scene and numerous personalities from the world of sports, fashion, culture, etc.
