Spain: The meat industry continues to party
The Spanish meat industry continues to grow abroad. In 2015, it exported 1.95 million tons worth 4,844 million euros worldwide. The sector accounts for 13% of industrial GDP of the country and more than 21% of the turnover and employment in the food industry. At the event, I have given the ANICE Awards in five categories: “Business Trajectory”, “Friends of the Flesh,” “Jose Flores Innovation”, “Food and Health” and “Sustainability and Environment”.
The National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE) today held its Assembly 2016 in Madrid, a day which have submitted data Spanish meat sector and its evolution during 2015 and have addressed two papers of great interest for the meat industry, as are the keys to restore confidence and attract consumers in times of crisis or operation of the Law on the Food Chain.

Following interventions by the invited speakers, Professor Jesus Windows, from the University of Extremadura, and José Miguel Herrero, Director of the Information Agency and Food Control (MAGRAMA), have delivered the awards I ANICE in five categories: “business Trajectory”, “Friends of the Flesh,” “Jose Flores Innovation”, “Food and Health” and “Sustainability and environment”.
ANICE the Meat Industry Awards

The first Quintilian Pérez Bonilla, Miguel Angel Diaz Yubero and Cleto Sanchez Vellisco for his work in the Ministry of Agriculture for the control and eradication of livestock diseases such as African swine fever, which precluded foreign trade of meat, curtailing the development of the meat industry.
The other Award “Friends of the Flesh” has given to Esperanza Orellana Moraleda, for his extensive and valuable work in front of the Spanish livestock-meat trade, leading several Deputy Directors General of the Ministry of Agriculture.
In the category “Jose Flores Innovation” have been given two awards this year. The first is for Jesus Ventanas Barroso for his research career of more than 30 years focused on the study of biochemistry and technology of cured meat products, working closely with the meat industry for the transfer of knowledge and application of the innovation.
The other prize “José Flores Innovation” has been awarded to the company Boadas 1880, S.A., for its commitment to innovation, including a range of charcuterie cured adjusted to new nutritional profiles, with a significant reduction in saturated fat and salt.
The “Food and Health” award has been given to space “Saber Vivir” program “the morning of the 1” of Spanish Television for his work to positively explain to viewers the properties and benefits of foods, including products meat, stressing the need to include them in a varied and balanced diet.
In the category “Sustainability and Environment” they have also given two awards. The first Pastors Cooperative Group for their contribution to the structuring and sustainability of the Aragonese rural areas, and their line of work-raising, training, energy saving and efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of its activities.
And the other prize in this category was awarded to Biobardales (Embutidos El Enebral, SA) for its pioneering organic production of hams and pork sausages white layer activity, developing management systems and pig feed and forms of development in a factory with the right technology.
An association serving the meat industry
ANICE meat is the largest association of Spain. Its almost 40 years of life support its work for the defense of the meat industry, and place it as the main business reference in the sector, bringing together more than 650 companies throughout the country, from SMEs to large industrial groups, and all beefing activities: slaughterhouses and cutting of pigs, cattle and sheep, sausage factories and all kinds of processed hams, Iberian products, etc. With this dimension, business leader by grouping more than 60% of Spanish meat production, highlighting in some products such as Iberian pork, which hosts more than 90% of the total.
In addition, the Association is present very actively in the backbones of the sector: for it participates in the Interprofessional Organizations white pig INTERPORC, Iberian pork ASICI, sheep and goat INTEROVIC and beef cattle PROVACUNO in CONFECARNE and Export Office Meat Spain (OEEC) and the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage (IFLA). He is also a member of the Alimentia Foundation and the Advisory Board of the Information Agency and Food Control (AICA).
Also present in European forums such as the Federation of Meat Industries Transformation of the European Union (CLITRAVI) and l’Union Européenne du Commerce du Bétail et de la Viande (UECBV) plus organizations internationally and the Office International Meat Secretariat (IMS).
The fourth industrial sector in Spain
ANICE is a strong organization for an important sector for the economy and little known, as evidenced by the production and export figures. According to the latest data available, which were presented today, the meat industry occupies by far the first of all the Spanish industry of food and beverages, representing a turnover exceeding 22,000 million euros, plus 21% of the Spanish food sector.
This turnover accounts for 2.1% of total Spanish GDP (at market prices) and 13.1% of the GDP of the industrial branch, and direct sectoral employment, more than 80,000 workers, also represents more than 23% of the total occupation of the Spanish food industry.
In 2015, the Spanish meat production was 4.7 million tons (an increase of 7.7% over the previous year). Of this total, pigmeat, the largest production grew 7.6%, getting closer and closer to 4 million tons, marking a year historical level ever. Meanwhile, production of cattle and sheep broke the downward trend registered since coming years, and thus beef grew 9.5%, to 633,792 tons, and sheep / goat grew by 2%, reaching 125,757 tons.
As for the production of meat products, it is noted that grew 1.8% to 1.347 million tons.
The Spanish meat industry last year exported 1.7 million tons of all kinds of products worth 4,467 million euros to markets around the world, a very relevant fact which establishes a positive trade balance of 460%.
The Spanish meat sector exported in 2015 a total of 1.95 million tons of meat and processed products worth 4,844 million euros to markets around the world (+ 15.9% in volume and + 8.4% in value compared to 2014), with a positive trade balance of 450%, a fact that very few relevant economic sectors can present.
Spain is already one of the top four exporters of pork, along with Germany, the United States and Denmark, with foreign sales of 1.54 million tons and 3,003 million euros in meat and offal, and 171,934 tons and 1,078 million euros in processed products.
As for beef, the balance of exports was dramatically positive in 2015 after years of difficulty, since the record high of 182,229 tons exported, reached 24.4% more compared to 2014, with a value of 598 million euros, 21% more than in the previous year.
