Mexican blueberry exports will increase in this campaign
According to the National Association of Berry Exporters (Aneberries) in Mexico, for the 2019/20 season, expect a 5% increase in blueberry exports compared to the previous campaign. In this way, blueberry exports are expected to reach an amount of 44 thousand tons; with the maximum volumes for the first quarter of 2020.
According to what Aneberries pointed out, North America remains the main destination market; with 97% of exports from Mexico. Subsequently there are Europe (1.7%); Asia (0.56%); and South America / Oceania (0.04%). In this regard, the association pointed out that “one of the main objectives of the industry is the diversification of the markets; the European and Asian being the main target markets ”. As for the current state of the blueberry campaign in Mexico, because it started in August, as usual, export numbers, so far, are not very important.
At the moment, the Department of Agriculture of America, through the USDA platform, reports a total of 4,617 tons, from August to November 2019 (start of the season).
Other challenges in the berry market
According to Aneberries, similar numbers to last season are expected for strawberry and blackberry. “Due to the start of this season and climatic factors that have influenced the start of it.” In turn, the markets that are affected by the export windows of the industry are explained.
“The volumes entered into the different markets have been maintained; as well as acceptance, thanks to the quality of Mexican fruit. ” In addition to working on the diversification of markets, another of the main objectives of the industry focuses on sustainability and social responsibility. “Due to the need of these aspects for the opening of new markets; and evolution of our industry, ”they said.
To boost social responsibility, Aneberries organizes training in national regulations and international requirements. In terms of technology, the objective is to continue growing in technology and promoting production in containers.
One of the main export products in the country are berries. In this regard, and in terms of area, the Mexican industry shows approximate growth between 16% and 20%. In order to achieve all the challenges in the industry, Aneberries took advantage of the instance to invite companies that are not members to join the association; and international companies to consider them as a bridge in investment projects.
