Córdoba will host the 1st International Oliviculture in hedge Symposium OLINT
The Campus of Rabanales of Córdoba will be held on 29th June the 1st International Symposium on Olive Growing in hedge OLINT, to be organized by the company AGROMILLORA and its medium of expression, OLINT magazine, in collaboration with the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineers of the University of Cordoba (UCO). With applications for registration that already exceed 550 places of its capacity, this event will be attended by the main olive companies in the sector.
This Symposium intends to make a tour of the present and the future of the olive grove in the hedge, in constant change and growth, since in 1994 AGROMILLORA technicians – a nursery company that leads the production and marketing at national and international level of olive trees – started the first commercial plantation of this crop in the world. A bet that has been materialized in a model of culture that at present represents around the 300,000 hectares worldwide, a figure that, although it seems small, compared to the more than 11 million hectares of world surface olive, is tremendously significant, having taking into account the time elapsed since the first plantation and the fact that olive growing had not undergone any changes until the onset of olive groves.
AGROMILLORA, through its technical magazine OLINT, and the University of Córdoba have been witnesses of exception of the important evolution that has since its origins the olive grove in hedge: through the pages of OLINT have passed pioneers, researchers, consultants, customers and all those who with their experience and knowledge contributed to the development of this system of cultivation. The innovative character of the magazine together with its quality and information transparency have made it a reference in olive growing. For its part, the University of Cordoba has been the great scientist of the system. Since the first tests carried out in 2000 by the team of Diego Barranco and Luis Rallo, the results obtained have given coherence and meaning to many of the perceptions and concerns that the pioneers were raising in the development of the system.
The contribution of the UCO goes beyond the mere homologation of the model of cultivation in hedge: a proof of it is the program of genetic improvement that has given rise to varieties like the Sikitita and that will continue to bear fruit with other genetic materials in the next years
Throughout this symposium, professionals, researchers and experts from olive cultivation and the olive sector will shape the main concerns and challenges of a growing crop whose impact has already been felt in the olive oil sector… precisely that will be the theme of one of its papers, along with other issues such as the testing of new varieties and densities in hedge olives; the application of this model to the production of table olives; the challenge that the Xyllella fastidiosa represents for the sustainability of the olive grove, or the role of this model in the development of olive growing in North Africa, among others.
