Aldi withdraws its claim of strawberries, after the UPA complaint
The German-based supermarket chain Aldi has withdrawn its offer of strawberries, which the Union of Small Farmers (UPA) had denounced the previous day, as it was considered abusive, as the selling price of the product was below the cost of production.
Twitter has been the channel chosen by the German company to announce its decision to withdraw its offer of strawberries at 1.98 euros / kg, below the cost of production. According to a UPA statement in a press release, “we are happy for the rapid reaction of the company, which has realized that using food as a product claims does a great harm to the sector and does not benefit anyone”. However, it has warned that its representatives and associates will remain vigilant.
UPA publicly denounced yesterday that the chain of distribution was using the strawberry as a product claim to attract consumers, incurring a sale at a loss, an illegal practice prohibited by law.
“We will remain vigilant to curb any type of abusive offer that takes place in the market,” they have pointed out from this organization. “You can not sell below what it costs to produce, besides illegal is immoral and does tremendous damage to the sector by sinking the prices that farmers perceive”.
“The distribution must be aware that the law prevents the use of products as a claim by advertising them at an abusive price, as well as sell them at a loss,” explained from this organization, which in any case thanked Aldi for the rapid withdrawal of the offer.
