ALAS welcomes the scientific opinion of ECHA which rules out the health risks of glyphosate
Member organizations of ALAS, Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture (ASAJA and UPA, Agro-food Cooperatives of Spain, the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Living Plants (FEPEX) and the Spanish Association of Conservation / Soils (AEAC / SV)) have celebrated the scientific opinion of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) according to which “the scientific evidence available does not permit the classification of glyphosate as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction”.
For ALAS, this opinion is a “very important” argument that should be taken into account by the European Commission and Member States when deciding on the renewal of authorization to use glyphosate
The Risk Assessment Committee of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has just issued an independent scientific opinion on the hazard classification of glyphosate. The ruling, which is conclusive, declares glyphosate “non-carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction” substance.
This opinion is in support of that already issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which is the body guaranteeing the safety of food products in the European Union
Likewise, the opinion consolidates the view of Germany, the rapporteur in the renewal of authorization for the use of glyphosate in the EU. Therefore, ALAS reaffirms its demand that Member States and the European Commission assume these results and proceed with the renewal of the authorization to use glyphosate for the maximum period contemplated in the regulations. According to its member organizations, the importance of this opinion is “essential” and should be taken into account when the Commission and Member States consider renewing the authorization to use glyphosate as the active substance in the herbicides at the end of this year year.
In this sense, the Spanish farmers, grouped in ALAS, trust that the Ministry of Agriculture reaffirms its position favorable to the renewal of the authorization and urge their representatives to the relevant Committee to help dissipate the reluctance of the countries Which have so far abstained pending the scientific opinion of the European Chemical Substances and Mixtures Agency.
