On February 4th, the authorities of the People’s Republic of China confirmed that the country has access to nectarines from Chile, a long awaited news from this South American country, whose materialization has been possible thanks to the joint work of the sector Public and private.

The Nobles in Codegua, O ‘Higgins Region, has been one of the first Chilean fruit producers to export nectarines to the People’s Republic of China

The company’s facilities were visited last February by Agriculture Minister Carlos Furche, accompanied by the national director of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), Óscar Camacho, the general manager of the Association of Fruit Exporters (Asoex), Miguel Canala-Echeverría, and Juan Carlos Sepúlveda, general manager of Fedefruta.

It should be noted that while awaiting this authorization, the SAG conducted inspections of nectarines to that market, in order to have the products ready to be exported. This measure allowed that, immediately after making public the announcement of green light to the exports of this fruit to China, a consignment of nectarines for the first time to the Asian country was dispatched for the first time.

According to statements by the Chilean Minister of Agriculture, “this is an aspiration of the long-standing Chilean fruit sector. China is a market that will be a very important destination for our production of nectarines and this achievement is a joint effort between the SAG, the Chinese authorities, which have to be given a very large recognition, and the private sector through the association of exporters”.

General Manager of Asoex: “Chile exports about 7 million boxes of nectarines to the world, and we estimate that about 50% will be exported to China starting next season (80% of white pulp varieties and 30% of those of yellow pulp)

Miguel Canala-Echeverría has reported that shipments are expected for a total of 3.5 million boxes for an estimated FOB value of US $ 55 million. Another important aspect pointed out by the general manager of Asoex is that the opening of the Chinese market “will allow a better distribution of this fruit in different markets, generating better global returns, higher than the current ones, totaling US $ 65 million per season”.

In November 2016, during the visit of the President of China, Xi Jinping, to Chile, the protocol for the export of nectarines was signed, which allowed the initiation of actions by the producer / exporter sector to comply with the requirements agreed with the country Asian. However, in order to initiate exports, China made a visit in January to verify compliance with this protocol, which concluded successfully and resulted in the fact that this important market is currently open for Chilean fruit.

On the other hand, it is important to note that the export period of nectarines started in December last year, so it was of great interest for the export sector to start shipments of this fruit to China before the end of the export season.

After the opening Asoex estimates that this season will ship around 300 thousand boxes to China, for an estimated value of US $ 4 million

The authorization of entry of nectarines adds to the species already authorized to export to the Chinese market such as: blueberries, cherries, plums, apples, kiwi, avocado, table grapes and walnuts with and without peel, making China one of the main markets for agricultural products in this country.
