Spain: The Hyvido hybrid barley produced 21% more than conventional varieties
The results are conclusive in a very difficult campaign by drought in May: the Hyvido varieties produced 21% more on average than conventional, reaching 5,893 kg / ha compared to 4,870 kg / ha, or 1,023 kg / ha more.
These results confirm the 2015 campaign stable production of hybrid varieties of barley with Hyvido technology, since tests performed in 2014 also gave a much higher yields than conventional varieties. So, last season was better climatic level, Hyvido varieties produced an average of 6,280 kg / ha, compared with 5,460 kg / ha of conventional, ie, 15% more than average. Another obvious fact is that with bad weather and drought conditions, as this 2015 campaign, Hyvido responsive.
The campaign concluded cereal harvest in 2015 was the first in which it has marketed the hybrid barley Hyvido Spain. In total, about 6,000 hectares planted across the country. The distribution zones have been mainly the fresh dry land in the northern half, from Vic, in the province of Barcelona, to the north of Burgos and the region of the Bureba. Also hectares have been planted in Navarra, La Rioja, Alava and irrigation Ebro Basin.
The year for the cereal in these areas has had two very distinct and opposite phases. A first from planting until the beginning of spring, which except for the extraordinarily persistent snowfall occurred in the counties further north, everything pointed to the cereal was well on track to achieve a great harvest. The second phase from spring has been marked by the terrible drought, but above all by the intense heat occurred in the month of May which has been a sharp drop in the expectations placed on the harvest.
The yields obtained in the 6,000 hectares of Hyvido have agreed to be expected in a campaign like this. In absolute terms, they have not reached the levels of other campaigns, mainly by the advancement that has led to crop the strong heat of May. However, in relative terms, comparing the performance obtained with Hyvido and differential to that obtained with the conventional grain, we can say that Hyvido been maintained, even improved, this difference in most areas.
Thus, in the area of Burgos this season have been harvested 5,994 kg / ha with barley varieties with Hyvido hybrid technology, compared to 4,473 kg / ha of conventional varieties, that is, 34% more. In Navarra they have harvested 6,518 kg / ha compared to 5,827 kg / ha, up 11%. In La Rioja they have been harvested 6,904 kg / ha against 5,613 kg / ha, a 23% increase. And in Catalonia they have harvested 5,734 kg / ha compared to 4,936 kg / ha, a 15% increase.
