Spain: second EU country authorized to export fresh pigmeat to Mexico
Spain is the second EU country, after Denmark, which may export fresh pigmeat to Mexico. An authorization which has completed successfully a long negotiation process between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), in coordination with the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission (EC) and health authorities Mexican.
The authorization for the opening of this market, notified by official letter, takes place after the visit, in November 2014, a delegation of experts and representatives of the National Health Service, Food Safety and Quality (SENASICA) to Spain, with the order to check the official control systems in slaughterhouses, cutting plants and meat industry Spanish.
After the visit, a long period of negotiations between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has succeeded, in coordination with DG Health and Food Safety of the European Commission and the Mexican authorities, which finally ended with the acceptance of the certificate export health and therefore with the opening of the market for pigmeat Mexico.
Mexico is a large importer of pork, about 750,000 tons annually. The main countries exporting to Mexico are the United States and Canada
In the coming days they will be available in the software application of the Ministry for the management of exports CEXGAN (livestock foreign trade), both the model approved of veterinary certificate and a list of establishments authorized to export veterinary certificate. A total of 12 establishments that had applied to participate in this market have been finally approved by the Mexican authorities.
Spanish meat exports
Spain, meanwhile, currently exports meat and pig meat products to 104 destinations in third countries, of which 49 require a specific agreement. Thus, exports outside the EU reached 534.300 tons in 2014, an increase of 21% in 2015 to reach 648.163 tons. In the first half of 2016 have already exported 481.213 tons, where fresh meat represents about 90% of exports compared to meat products, being the main destinations in third countries China, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, according CEXGAN data.
The export of Spanish food products continues to increase in volume and number of markets. Meat and pig meat products is the sector with the highest export volume, which will increase with the opening of this new market.
