Spain: Red fruit exports in the first half of 2015 grew by 15% and reach 861 million euros

Spanish exports of fresh fruits and vegetables totaled 6,738,000 euros and 6,971,473 tons in the first half of the year, with growth of 11.88% in value and 6.22% by volume. Of note is the good performance of foreign sales in June, totaling 1,146 million euros, an increase of 19.5% in value and 1,014,450 tons (+ 10.1%).
By chapters, vegetable export increases 1.40% in volume, totaling 2,688,152 tons and 9.82% in value, amounting to 2.952 million euros in the first half. The behavior varies widely among products. 2.10% tomato remains the first vegetable exported 612 million euros, down while the volume remains stable with 623,000 tons. Next in importance pepper 509 million euros (+ 4.75%) and 385,000 tons (-1.65%). Cucumber, falling 2.25% and its exports totaled 246 million euros and 229,000 tons.
Performed well Zucchini totaling 196 million euros and exports grew by 57%, while 16% retreat in volume. Exports grow strongly lettuce totaling 409 million euros (+ 14.61%) and sprouts, including broccoli, with 311 million euros (+ 12.07%).
In the first half of 2015 and Chapter of fresh fruits performed well red fruits totaling 861 million euros (+ 15%), orange with 792 million euros (+ 27%) and fruit bone with 503 million euros (+ 7%).
More export due to increasing consumption in the EU
The export growth remains dependent on the performance of sales in the EU markets, accounting for 93.72% of the total, with growth of 14% in value, compared to the first half of 2014. Exports to non-European countries grew 30% in value and amounted to 205 million euros in the first half of 2015.
For FEPEX export growth it is mainly attributable to the good performance of consumer demand in the whole EU. Also noteworthy is the contribution of new non-European markets, but still represent a small percentage of sales. Therefore, FEPEX considers it a priority to strengthen competitiveness in the EU market, to which the economic sustainability and employment in horticulture.
