Spain among EU leading foreign trade of eggs through the US
Spain quadruples egg exports to third countries. Between July and September, Spain sent half the eggs exported from the European Union (EU) to the United States. It is the country that increased the volume of table eggs exported from the EU from January to September 2015, with 25,717 tons, almost quadrupling the 6,700 tonnes shipped to third countries in the same period last year. The turnover amounted to 68 million euros.
The EU exported 87,762 tons of table eggs in shell during the first nine months of this year, 38.4% more than in the same months of 2014 (according to data published by the EU). Holland remains the Community exporter to third countries, with 29,906 tonnes, similar to 2014. Total exports of eggs and egg products reached the 193,615 tons, equivalent to a turnover of EUR 255 million figure.
The Community industry is clearly egg exporter, and holds a leading position in world trade. It is the third commercial area by volume, after Turkey and the US, and ahead of China and Malaysia, also major global exporters. The main destinations of EU eggs are Switzerland, USA, UAE, Angola, Congo and Hong Kong.
The EU is strengthening its global presence over the past 5 years. The balance of the European egg market since 2010 shows a 3% increase in self-sufficiency, which has gone from 102% to 105%, which explains the growing trade figures. Total consumption has remained stable in recent years in 12 kilos of eggs per person per year.
In addition, the EU also exports a significant amount of eggs for hatching, representing a third of the volume of shell eggs sent to third countries.
Export to USA places Spain among the leading foreign trade from EU
The turnover from sales of eggs from the Spanish companies abroad amounted to 68 million euros through September, of which almost half went to third countries. Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia and Aragon are the main exporting autonomous communities in 2015. By provinces, Valladolid, Toledo, Cuenca and Guadalajara are the leading foreign trade.
United States is the main destination of Spanish eggs in shell, followed by France, Italy and Israel. Until September 2015, Spain exported to the North American country, 10,585 tons of eggs, worth more than 15 million euros, representing 53% of total exports from the EU to this destination.
“Exports to the US have given oxygen to the Spanish producers, passing through a very difficult year for the sector financially. We know that US recovering his cabin after passing the recent episode of avian influenza and therefore we expect the Spanish exports to that destination will end in the coming months, “says Mar Fernandez, director of Inprovo.
Spanish producers are already looking for alternatives “in third countries, where demand and prices are more attractive than in the EU” for when American purchases were reduced.
