Smurfit Kappa collaborates with Scania to create a sustainable packaging solution that optimizes its supply chain
Smurfit Kappa, leader in the paper and corrugated cardboard packaging sector, has collaborated with the global transport provider Scania to replace some of the materials used in its supply chain with 100% sustainable paper-based packaging solutions. Specifically, he has worked with the division ‘Scania Parts Logistics’, responsible for the distribution of all parts of the brand, which has a complex supply chain through which they pass many products of different sizes, some of which of special fragility .
Scania had the need to pack truck windows in a more optimized and sustainable way, since until now they were transported using four different materials, including wooden pallets and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
To create the solution that best suits all these peculiarities, Smurfit Kappa used its SupplySmart service, which reviewed every aspect of Scania’s supply chain. Subsequently, he compared this analysis with the data collected from more than 60,000 supply chains to identify the areas in which sustainable changes could be made.
The innovative proposal presented by Smurfit Kappa replaced the interior of EPS and the wooden pallet with a honeycomb packaging, a completely sustainable material made of paper. In this way, we moved from a solution made up of multiple materials to one made from a single material, which also reduced storage space by 50%, which meant significant savings in Scania’s transport costs.
Brechtel Coox, packaging engineer of Scania Parts Logistics, assured that “after an exhaustive review of the complex report that we presented, Smurfit Kappa managed to offer us an ingenious solution that exceeded all our expectations”. And is that “Scania Parts Logistics depends on an optimized supply chain to guarantee our customers a service of the highest quality”, added the manager.
For his part, Erik Bunge, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Corrugated Benelux, said that “this project has been the result of a collaboration process between Smurfit Kappa and Scania Parts Logistics. Our starting point was to analyze how we could optimize our supply chain in terms of time, costs and sustainability. The paper solution that we present, which combines the cardboard production capabilities.
