Peru: Peru: banana exports surpass record of 128 million dollars
The value of Peruvian banana exports between January and October 2016 reached 128.8 millions of dollars, an increase of 7% over the same period of 2015 and is a record, being the highest figure registered in the mentioned period during the last five years, according to data of the Association of Exporters (ADEX). As pointed out by the Association, the growing demand for the main markets of the Peruvian banana and the increase of cultivated hectares in the north explains this significant increase.
According to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Trade Intelligence System, shipments amounted to 71.4 millions of dollars between January and October 2012, 74.2 millions in 2013, 96.3 millions in 2014 and 120.3 millions in 2015
This upward trend also manifested itself in the exported volume, since to October of 2015 also grew a 7.6%.
The main market for Peruvian bananas was the Netherlands, which imported them for 43.3 millions (an increase of 8.8%) and concentrated 33.6% of what was shipped. In second place was USA. With 38.9 million, which, despite a contraction of 11.3%, represented 30.2% of the total.
According to the guild exporter, both destinations owe their demand to their preference for organic products. Bananas are in the top five of the fruits that these countries buy, so the Peruvian exporters will continue to work to maintain them as they are big consumers and the product is well quoted.
In the ranking of markets followed Germany with orders for 17.9 millions of dollars, Belgium with 11.2 millions, Republic of Korea, Finland, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Italy, France, Mexico, China, Russia, between Others out of a total of 24.
ADEX Economic Studies management identified opportunities for bananas for 145 millions of dollars in destinations such as Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Italy, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, Uruguay, Malaysia, Thailand and others.
In the last five years bananas have experienced a better price in the market, confirming that the product continues to be dynamic and is an interesting option for producers, who have also diversified their offer
According to an ADEX report, the main variety exported was “Cavendish Valery”, but also dried bananas, “plantain” dry and fresh, and bananas sandwich (manzanito). The increase in banana exports from Peru also responds to the new areas of cultivation in Piura, Tumbes and Lambayeque, northern regions that concentrate 100% of the production and exportable supply of organic bananas. It should be noted that the peak harvest is from November to March with regular harvest all year.
According to the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, between January and October of this year the main banana exporters were Cooperativa Agraria Association of Small Producers of Organic Banana Samán and Annexes (APPBOSA), Querecotillo Small Organic Producers Association, Pronatur SAC, Agribusiness Los Angeles SAC, etc.
