Peru: Aquaculture generated more than 100,000 jobs in 2015
This sector is a major source of opportunities and development. That aquaculture has become in our country, according to figures from Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Production (Produce), Juan Carlos Requejo, has created more than 102,000 jobs over the past year.
The official said that it is expected that until 2021 the sector increase this indicator by 30%, making it one of the engines of development. With that leap, it would constitute not less than 15% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fishing.
He noted that part of this boost to aquaculture was due to the adjustment to the General Aquaculture Act, which was enacted in August last year, and the creation of Technology Innovation Centres (Cite) aquaculture.
He also recalled that to date have been implemented Cite Ahuashiyacu in San Martin and Boat Dock in Puno, which are public, as well as the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, which is private.
Published regulations
On March 25 last Produce published the regulations of the General Law on Aquaculture. According to the perspective of Piero Ghezzi, Minister of Production, the law and regulations will grant legal certainty to investments, large and small sector.
Ghezzi also stressed that “in the last three decades, the production of farmed fish in aquaculture increased 12-fold, with an annual growth rate of over 8%, while capture fisheries had already peaked.”
On the other hand, he stressed that Produce has strengthened the National Fisheries Health Agency (Sanipes), a key body to promote aquaculture exports. In that sense, it is modernizing and adapting to the health standard an important group of artisanal fishing wharves covering more than 90% of fishing.
The rule creates the Single Window Aquaculture and gives a period of 120 days regional governments to adjust their administrative procedures to promote this activity.
It is expected that the regulations of the General Law on Aquaculture raise the productivity of more than 4,000 aquaculture units nationwide.
