Over 2.200 million for the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy
Spain could have more than 2,200 million euros from the European Fund Maritime and Fisheries -1.161 million which should be increased with other financial contributions- for the implementation of Operational Programme 2014-2020 of the Common Fisheries Policy (PPC), as reported by the General Director of Fisheries Management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Carlos Larrañaga, on the occasion of the XXII EXPOMAR 2016 Technical Conference, held on May 15 in the town of Burela (Lugo).
Larrañaga stressed Spain’s commitment to the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy and referred to the European Fund Maritime and Fisheries, as the main financial tool, highlighting its main keys help fishermen in the transition sustainable fisheries, supporting coastal communities to diversify their economies and financing projects to create jobs and improve the quality of life in European coasts. He has also used his speech to detail the eligible measures included in the Spanish Operational Programme 2014-2020.
The European Fund Maritime and Fisheries established between their funding priorities the promotion of sustainable and competitive fisheries, through measures such as reducing the impact of fishing on the marine environment, protection of biodiversity, the balance between capacity fishing and fishing opportunities, promoting competitiveness and support for strengthening technological development and innovation, among others.
Another priority is the promotion of a sustainable and competitive aquaculture which involves support for strengthening technological development, promoting the viability of aquaculture enterprises, protection and recovery of aquatic biodiversity and the promotion of aquaculture with a high level of environmental protection, health and welfare of the animals.
Third, it is the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy, which envisages the improvement and supply of scientific knowledge and monitoring support to control and enforcement, enhancing institutional capacity and an efficient public administration, without increasing the administrative burden.
Another detailed priorities for Larrañaga has been increasing employment and territorial cohesion by promoting economic growth, social inclusion, job creation and employability support.
Finally, he noted the drive for marketing and processing, including improved market organization and encouragement of investment, and promoting the implementation of the Integrated Maritime Policy, with support measures to help achieve their goals and drive its development and implementation.
The General Director of Fisheries Management has highlighted the important contribution of the European Fund Maritime and Fisheries to achieving Europe 2020 within the framework of the structural funds and European investment, and has advocated a development led by local communities through Local Action Fishing Groups.
