In a speech in Paris in 1950 speech, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, presented his idea of a new form of political cooperation to make war unthinkable between European nations.
That idea was a European institution that joined and managed the production of coal and steel. Just one year later the Treaty establishing the institution was created was signed. Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union.
