EU works with the transport sector to reduce GHG emissions
European ministers of the areas of Environment and Transport analyze the future of transport in Europe and technological innovation as an opportunity to improve the environment and energy efficiency of fuels and vehicles. The goal is to work together to achieve further reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in both sectors.
It is important that aviation and maritime transport to reach global agreements to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. This was stressed today the Secretary of State for the Environment Spanish, Pablo Saavedra, during his speech at the Informal Council of Ministers of Transport and Environment of the European Union held since last Thursday in Amsterdam (Netherlands).
On this last day of the Council line ministers have discussed how you can work together to achieve greater reductions in global emissions from aviation and shipping, while employment is safeguarded, competitiveness and growth economic.
In this sense, Saavedra said that coordination is essential, because by working together “get take into account all aspects, both environmental and competitiveness and development, and will be easier to find an acceptable balance for all countries”.
As environmental policies within the framework of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) involve agreements between countries with different environmental sensitivities is important to launch at European level a strategy of cooperation and communication with other countries that try develop environmental medium and long-term policies, he has stated the secretary of State.
Regarding how to contribute constructively to the discussions at ICAO and IMO Secretary of State explained that Spain fully supports the search for global agreements in these forums, which allow these sectors to respond to the environmental challenges faced by its strong growth forecast.
Finally, both with regard to maritime transport and aviation, Saavedra has indicated that cooperation with third countries should also be strengthened given that the agreements must be global.
