Ecuador exports 92% of its mango to the United States
As part of the promotion of the fruit, Fundación Mango Ecuador prepares the International Mango Congress for the seventh time in the country. Johnny Jara, executive director of the foundation, addressed the media explaining the benefits of the crop, and the importance of this event for foreigners and locals.
“The cultivation of mango is small in relation to cocoa or banana, but during the last quarter of the year (October to December) it gives a lot of work to female labor,” he explained. “The people who are out of work at that time, enter the packing houses of mango farms to provide the service in packing of the boxes that are exported.”
He also indicated that the main buyer of Ecuadorian mango internationally is the United States, which is the one that collects 92% of the exported fruit. Behind them is Canada with 3%, New Zealand with 2%, while the rest is divided between Europe, Mexico, Chile and other countries in America. These countries are exported fresh boxes of 4 kilos, 6 to 7 mangoes or 12 to 14 mangoes.
The main areas where the fruit is planted are: Guayas (95%) and Los Ríos (5%) in the sectors of Via a la Costa, De Nobol to Pedro Carbo, and Nobol to Vinces.
In the 2017-2018 campaign, the country exported 13,685,119 boxes of 4 kilos of mango, 1% more than in the 2016-2017 season.
Given the importance of fruit for Ecuador in non-traditional agriculture, Fundación Mango organizes since 2006 the International Mango Congress, an event that not only trains Ecuadorian producers, but also foreigners from Colombia, Peru and Central America. Each year it has around 400 attendees from all over the world (between exhibitors and guests) and is one of the most important training events internationally.
