The supermarkets of ASEDAS, Spanish Association of Distributors, Supermarkets and Supermarkets foresees an increase in Christmas consumption between 3 and 5 percent. They also expect the largest influx of customers during the Christmas and New Year weeks, especially on the weekends of the 23rd and 24th and the 30th and 31st of December.

Spaniards concentrate their purchases and collection of food orders in the hours leading up to the celebrations, although supermarkets have been reinforcing the most demanded product sections in this period for weeks. Specifically, the charcuterie – with the cured ham as a star product followed by the cheeses -, the butcher shop – in which the lamb, together with noble pieces of beef, continues to stand out -, the fish market in terms of seafood and drinks sections -Wine, dig, especially-. The demand for these categories is doubled and, in some cases, tripled.

To serve this point of affluence to supermarkets, a workforce of 260,000 employees works during the Christmas weeks with the aim of responding to demand and maintaining control of store orders with the dual objective of fresh products arrive from the field to the table in 21 hours and encourage circular economy practices in efficiency issues in terms of logistics and control of food waste.

During this Christmas, consumption growth is expected between 3 and 5% compared to last year’s campaign. This figure is reinforced by an increase in the demand for quality products in both the fresh and canned fruit and fish sections.

Christmas shopping combines quality and tradition, without major changes in the demand for products beyond an orientation to the quality of these dates

The supermarket is still the preferred channel for most purchases. This is the case of meat, a category in which the local supermarket distributes 60.3 percent of the total fresh meat that is purchased in Spain and 72.5 percent of the processed meat. Similar situation presents fish and seafood, products in which consumers give confidence to supermarkets in 79.8 percent.

Regarding the consumption of wine, the supermarket is also a leader with a sales volume of 63.8 percent of the total

With regard to Christmas sweets, another great Christmas classic, supermarkets sell 74.3 percent of mantecados and turrones.

Finally, and as a curious fact, the local supermarket responds to the increase in the consumption of toys and electronic devices with a considerable increase in the sale of batteries. Categories destined to gifts like lots of perfumes, chocolates, flowers and Christmas decorations also add prominence in the linear ones.

Ignacio García Magarzo, CEO of ASEDAS, “the supermarket responds to consumer demand for quality products at competitive prices at this time of the year with a proximity factor that is essential to purchase fresh products in the hours before the celebrations . We hope that this campaign confirms the recovery of consumption that we have been observing throughout this year. ”
