An innovative solution against the verticilium defoliante was presented in the framework of Expoliva
On April 27th, a day was held in the Palacio de Congresos de Jaén as an event prior to Expoliva, which under the title “The Vertirés Olive Tree , an innovative solution against the defoliant verticillium”, welcomed the presentation of this significant milestone, as a result of the great perseverance with which Plantas Continental and various scientists and scholars of the University of Cordoba have been investigating for years to deal with the pernicious effects on the verticillium olivar, which limits its operation, reduces its population and sometimes makes it impossible to exploit of said crop in certain areas.
This event, which was attended by 250 professionals from the sector, was inaugurated by Juan Balbín, Delegate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Province of Jaén; José Juan Gaforio, Commissioner of the Center for Advanced Studies in Olive Oil at the University of Jaén; Enrique Quesada, Vice-Chancellor of Innovation, Transfer and Campus of Excellence at the University of Córdoba and Francisco Manuel Sánchez, Director of the IFAPA Venta del Llano Center, Geolit Technology Center.
The organizers of this meeting have emphasized that verticillium (Verticillium dahliae) is the most important and difficult disease control of olive trees in Andalusia today. Both aspects are concomitant with the extension of high density plantations; the use of planting material not sanitarily certified and irrigated; and the distribution of a highly virulent defoliant pathogen, which was detected in 1984 and has spread in all the Andalusian olive areas.
The use of resistance to the patotipo is the most effective measure for the control of the verticilosis in the olive tree, but the prevalence of the same has negative repercussion on the efficiency of olive cultivars with resistance incomplete to said patotipo
In particular, acebuche vertirés clones, registered in Spain and in the EU, grow asymptomatic and reduce infection by 18 pathotype more than 1,500 times in conditions that determine the death of the picual, for more than three years when transplanted with the soil plague infested with micro plots under natural conditions. An ongoing trial preliminarily confirms the agronomic compatibility of these porta grafts and cultivars, the development and production of which has not shown any apparent detriment.
Obtained through a research program led by Rafael M. Jiménez Díaz, Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Córdoba, it has been concluded that the Vertirés olive tree is an innovative, unique, registered and resistant solution to verticillium, a disease that has a replenishment rate of between 3 and 5% of the world’s olive trees, especially in the Mediterranean Basin, and whose economic effects per campaign are between 100 and 300 million euros.
In addition to Professor Rafael M. Jiménez Díaz, the session was attended by the strategic consultant Juan Vilar, who has provided figures on international olive growing and the impact of verticillium; Juan Requena, commercial director of Continental Plants, who has talked about the justification, channel, categories, commercial planning and distribution of the product; and María Serrano, an expert lawyer in intellectual property, who dealt with the mandatory legal implications in the use of the product.
