The organic sector exceeds 40 billion euros in market volume in Europe
Ecovalia presents the Annual Report on Organic Production in Spain 2020 at Caixa Forum Madrid, which confirms the growing trend of the sector. Spain, with almost two billion, continues in the ‘Top 10’ of European countries with the largest volume of organic market ahead of Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Organic production is in luck, according to the data collected in the An Annual Report on Organic Production in Spain ’of Ecovalia, the national reference association for professionals in the organic sector.
In market volume, the organic sector has overcome the barrier of 40 billion euros in Europe and Spain, with 1,903 million, is seventh place only surpassed by Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Sweden.
The area dedicated to organic farming in the world already exceeds 71 million hectares. As regards Spain, it continues to occupy the fourth position worldwide, only behind Australia, Argentina and China and the first one at European level, ahead of France and Italy. It should be noted that in Spain almost 10% (9.7%) of its useful agricultural area is ecological. Likewise, our country remains among the top ten markets for organic products in the world.
Álvaro Barrera, president of Ecovalia, stressed that the ecological sector “continues unstoppable growth and thus, in 2018 there was an increase in the volume of the market, worldwide, placing it at 97,000 million Euros”. “We grow 19.9% more in surface, above 70 million hectares worldwide, data that ratify the good health enjoyed by the sector.” Barrera has shown that this improvement in the Spain sector “plays a key role, which is endorsed by the good work of our country’s organic production and the added value it represents. In addition, these are very important data that Spain contributes to the fulfillment of the SDGs ”.
Statistics have been compiled from data published by FIBL and IFOAM in Biofach 2020, as well as from data advanced by the MAP. Ecovalia has collected them in its ‘Annual Report on Organic Production in Spain’ and highlighted them together with its annual activity and its main national and international projects.
