Photojournalism awards “Mercabarna Focuses”
The prizes, worth € 8,000, among the best equipped in Spain. For 3 months hundreds of photographers are mixed with 23,000 merchants. Mercabarna launches the call for the awards “Mercabarna Focuses”, to be known among citizens. This market, which enjoys prestige among food professionals around the world but is unknown among ordinary citizens, wants to approach them through the best shots of professional photographers and amateur participants.
Therefore, Mercabarna turns for three months in the picture, through the convening of two contests: the first photojournalism and documentary photography for professionals; and second, for users of the social network Instagram. The awards “Focus Mercabarna”, worth € 8,000 in total, will select the best reports that show the qualities of one of the largest and most important wholesale markets in Europe.
To do this, from 26 April to 24 June, hundreds of photographers will have the opportunity to visit Mercabarna to know and document the daily life of “the city that feeds you.” A special market that opens its doors to photographers and instagramers to provide a single point of view on the activity of one of the economic engines of Catalonia.
The competitions, which will be following through social networks, culminating in a photographic exhibition to be held in autumn, and where they will present to the public the best works.
The vitality of Mercabarna, through a professional look
The competition for professionals aims to achieve a deep, reasoned, thoughtful and positive look on life, people, facilities and values Mercabarna. The reports submitted must be framed in photojournalism or documentary photography with the aim of rediscovering the market for a professional look. The best stories will be awarded participants with a “Mercabarna Focuses” professional prize with prize of 6,000 €, one of the largest awards for photojournalists Spain.
Instagramers, a fresh, spontaneous look
The contest seeks to instagramers fresh, intuitive and spontaneous look of living #ExperienciaMercabarna. To this end, instagramers will have the opportunity to participate in the four meetings instagramer to visit the market and take pictures that hang on the social network. The two best sets of 4 pictures will be rewarded with two awards “Mercabarna Focuses” to Instagramers of € 1,000 each, the highest prize for instagramers in Spain.
The jury recognized professional photojournalism
The professional jury will be composed of recognized professionals of photojournalism:
– David Airob, member of the professional jury, photojournalist for the newspaper La Vanguardia of which he was editor in chief of photography between 2007 and 2010. World Press Photo Multimedia Award 2014.
– Chema Conesa, member of the professional jury, photographer. He was chief photographer for the Sunday supplement of El Pais and El Mundo. 2010 Bartolomé Ros Award for career and in 2012 photography prize of the Community of Madrid. It has been sworn of the National Prize of Photography and the World Press Photo among others
– Tania Castro, director of Photon Festival. Photo Documenta founder, organizer and coordinator of the festival association award “Mercabarna Focus” for 16 years was part of the graphic team of El País and is curator and photography books. He has been jury Scholarship Award Fotogràfic Forum Espai Can Basté.
The instagramer jury will be composed of the PHOTON Festival team and representatives of Mercabarna.
The jury will select 10 finalists in each mode, and communicate through social media profiles of “Mercabarna Focuses”, from July 1, one day. The awards to the three winners will take place on July 15, 2016.
“Mercabarna, the city that feeds you”
The graphic possibilities presented by the market are enormous. Mercabarna is a “food city” boiling activity 24 hours a day with a very clear objective: to ensure maximum supply and variety of fresh citizens of Catalonia with the best quality and price of food.
At 90 hectares, the size of 90 football fields, Mercabarna concentrated wholesale markets of Barcelona (fruits and vegetables, seafood and flowers and plants) and some 700 companies specializing in the manufacture, distribution, import and export fresh foods. Its enormous logistical capacity, can sell about two million tons of fresh produce distributed to retail stores, supermarket chains and restaurants throughout Catalonia, Spain and other countries annually.
With 23,000 professionals who focus every day to sell or buy, this huge market has all the services that can be found in a big city (pharmacy, bars and restaurants, day care, hairdressing, optical, etc.). Some buyers move between jobs bike to explore the huge market quickly.
