More than 12 years of research in plant health, crowned with success
The company Bayer introduced the June 10th its product Velum® Prime, a nematicide innovative for horticultural crops, which acts against harmful microorganisms for plant roots. This solution is the result of over 12 years of research by the company and is fully compatible with integrated pest management as Velum®Prime is respectful of pollinators and beneficial insects to crops.
Nematodes are small microorganisms present in the soil. Most of them contribute to this cycle nutrients and natural diversity. However, there are a small number that cause plant damage because they feed on their roots and limit or even prevent the supply of water and nutrients. To combat them, Bayer has developed an innovative nematicide for horticultural crops.
Velum®Prime is indicated to combat these harmful nematodes, such as Meloidogyne spp genus. These microorganisms, by affecting the plant roots can cause damage as production declines, stress or even death of the plant. This solution, which Bayer has worked for over 12 years, acts on the respiratory system of harmful nematodes for horticultural crops and, at the same time is respectful of pollinators and beneficial insects (being natural predators of pests) essential for the farmer, which makes it compatible with integrated pest management.
Jordi Fullana, crop manager of horticultural crops Bayer, said: “With Velum®Prime we provide modern agriculture a nematicide which guarantees a higher level of control of these microorganisms, easy to use and most market efficiency. Furthermore, with this new solution, “a Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) are achieved well below what authorized, which accredits more security for consumers and also enhances its exportability”.
The official presentation of Velum®Prime in Spain took place at the auditorium of the University of Almeria to a group of more than 300 farmers and technicians. The event was framed within a conference on the effect of nematodes on horticultural crops, which was attended Xavier Sorribas, professor of Plant Protection of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia; Josep Izquierdo, head of development at Bayer insecticides, and Jordi Fullana, crop manager at Bayer horticultural crops.
