Monterosa, a tomato ‘as before’
After a long research process of eight years, Semillas Fitó has obtained a variety of tomato seed, Monterosa, getting back the traditional Mediterranean tomato taste, not only in summer but also in crops from December to June. Quite an achievement that has recently been recognized with the award for innovation in fruit and vegetables in the V edition of Prizes “To your health”, organized by the newspaper La Razón.
The Minister of Health, Social Services and Equality, Alfonso Alonso, presented the award to Jordi Ballester, responsible for this research project, in the presence of Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid, Jesús Sánchez Martos.
The Monterosa tomato is a joint project between the seed company Fitó and Gavá Group, through its production company, Kopagro, and its trading company, Kopalmería. This is a variety that is grown in lands of Cabo de Gata (Almería) and whose main singularity is, above all, its extraordinary traditional flavor in winter crops.
After Monterosa there are eight years of hard work in the development of its seed under a recovery program flavor, in charge of the company Semillas Fito. It is a cross between pear tomatoes Girona, with O.D., and a classic Italian garden, the Costoluto Genoveso. The result achieved with Monterosa offers, among other organoleptic characteristics, feeling the sweet palate with fruity acidity and absent end.
