Linde presents its new system of cameras Surround View
If a pedestrian enters the “blind spot” of a truck, chances are that an accident will occur. The operator may not notice the person before it is too late, or even not see it at any time. According to the Statistical Report of Work Accidents, published by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, in Spain there were 47,825 accidents with industrial vehicles in 2017, which caused 49 deaths. Therefore, as part of its commitment to safety, Linde Material Handling now offers a peripheral vision system to reduce the risk of accidents: Surround view.
In the automotive sector, numerous manufacturers offer well-known solutions for vision systems such as parking assistance, based on video. These systems are formed by several cameras and the appropriate software so that the resulting individual images can be combined to form a general image. The on-board computer places the contour image of the vehicle inside a screen and shows it to the driver.
The “Surround View” system launched by Linde goes a step further: the image shown is based on live data from the cameras mounted around the truck, but instead of a single overall image, the system generates a forward field of view , another rear and two side. The great advantage of this solution is that the views of the cameras are shown 1: 1 as a split screen on the monitor of the driver’s workstation. This avoids a distorted and, therefore, possibly unclear representation of the overlapping areas of the camera produced by the simple “bird’s eye” system. If there is someone in the superimposed area of the two cameras, it will appear in the two fields of vision.
Safe maneuverability
When driving forward, the four viewing areas are displayed on the default screen. When driving backwards, the screen changes to the back and side fields of vision. Therefore, the operator recognizes possible collision hazards in advance. This not only applies to pedestrians around the truck: you can also avoid damage to merchandise, shelves and the truck itself thanks to the expanded view.
More visibility also means greater productivity. Operators can work more efficiently, quickly and ergonomically. For example, during storage, you can see what is happening in front of the forks, even if the load obstructs visibility. “This new optional equipment will initially be offered on all counterbalanced forklift models with a load capacity of four tons or more,” says Frank Bergmann, Product Manager of Linde Material Handling counterbalanced forklifts. Especially in narrow working areas and during maneuvers, the system provides a real benefit, as Bergmann points out: “Every angle around the vehicle falls within the operator’s vision. And this is especially important for operational safety in areas where space is limited or where people and trolleys are likely to cross routes. ”
It should be noted that the “Surround View” system is another solution with which Linde Material Handling aims to reduce the number of accidents during the handling of goods to zero, in the medium term, following its security approach “Vision Zero. Safety in your world. ”
