Farmers of Huelva defend against those who link their activity with the fire of Doñana
Farmers and herdsmen in Huelva have flatly rejected the accusations of some groups for whom the origin of the Doñana fire would be in uncontrolled farming practices and have expressed their utter indignation and anger. From the Union of Small Farmers (UPA) Huelva has defended the important implication that the agricultural sector has with the conservation of its environment and has denied these accusations: “in Huelva there is no uncontrolled agriculture” they affirm, “and, of course, we are most interested in protecting our environment. Our lives are in it”.
According to reports from UPA Huelva, more than 150 farmers have spent the night with their tractors, collaborating with the means of extinction, and allowing the water from the rafts of their strawberry farms can be used by the helicopters to put out the fire
The secretary general of UPA Huelva, Manuel Piedra, has, from the moment the fire was declared, collaborating with the advanced command post that coordinates the tasks for the extinction of the fire. “The helicopters yesterday used the water from the irrigation rafts of the strawberry farms to put out the fire,” explained Piedra.
During the night farmers have not rested either: from 8 pm on Sunday 25 June to 6 am on Monday, June 26, more than 150 farmers with their tractors have spent the night collaborating with means of extinguishing, making firebreaks and clearing zones to limit the fire and to brake its advance.
“Let no one hesitate,” they have cried from UPA, “that we are most interested in protecting our environment, which is unique, and of which we live.” “Those who drop unfounded accusations that relate agriculture to fire are irresponsible”
UPA Huelva also wanted to show gratitude to the means of extinction of INFOCA, the Civil Guard, the EMU and “all those who are putting their lives in danger to put an end to this terrible fire, which can only be the cause of a terrorist environmental, soulless and upset, “they concluded.
