Egyptian agriculture led to international success from Europe
More than 90 Egyptian companies have supported the Agriculture Export Council of Egypt jointly exhibiting at Fruit Logistica 2016. Its participation, with more than 1,700 square meters, it has attracted the attention of hundreds of international companies from around the world. Egypt, which has been the partner country at Fruit Logistica 2016, held more than 700 business meetings during the fair and is prepared to expand their agricultural exports beyond their faithful allies.
“We rely on this fair since 1999 and this year we broke all records for participation,” says the engineer Ali Eissa, Chairman of Export Agriculture Egypt.
Egypt has vast areas of new land free of pollution or disease. These new areas favor the cultivation of high-quality products and Egypt is currently optimizing its potential to expand its area used for agriculture by major reclamation projects. Its unique geographical location ensures the quality of its production, which employs over 32% of the workforce of the country. In 2014-2015 the country exported more than 2.000 billion in agricultural products excluding rice-, representing more than 14% of Egypt’s GDP. Being the world’s largest exporter of oranges, Egypt is also the second largest producer of artichokes, the fifth largest producer of tomatoes (specializing in semi-dry and dry tomatoes) and the sixth largest producer of strawberries. However, the range of Egyptian products also committed to the production of pomegranates, dates and spices.
Its production area is mainly focused on new areas, home to 80% of Egyptian grain fields, whose main markets are the other Arab countries (50% of Egyptian agricultural exports) and the European Union ( around 27%). Egypt exports a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. In 2014 and 2015 oranges (1.22 million tons) they topped the list of exports, followed by potatoes (650,000 tons), onions (492,000 tons), dried beans (182,000 tons), grapes (111,000 tons), tomatoes ( 109,000 tons), grenades (55,000 tons), green beans (44,000 tonnes), tangerines (36,000 tons), strawberries (34,000 tons), lemons (33,000 tons) and peanuts (26,000 tons).
The sector of logistics and transport Egypt plays an increasingly important role in international trade. About 90% of Egypt’s foreign trade is transported through ports, while the logistic capacity of the country continues to expand in parallel with the market volume.
A current example is the expansion of the Suez Canal, which is expected to double the current capacity of 49-97 ships a day. “This means that the transport of our products will be provided, because it will attract service providers and major transportation lines,” argues the engineer Ali Eissa, Chairman of Export Agriculture Egypt.
The Egyptian authorities are definitely committed to their agricultural sector, rowing in the same direction with the investment in modern irrigation techniques, packaging facilities, refrigeration and in order to comply with legal requirements in order to expand its certification and traceability. With all of these objectives has been implemented in Egypt Green Trade Initiative, an ambitious plan sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, together with the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Egypt, in collaboration with the Ministry of International Cooperation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Italian.
