Costa Rica: a computing platform serving agricultural productivity
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications of Costa Rica will invest ₡ 50 million in the creation of a National Agricultural Information System, serving producers and market Chorotega, which will help to improve productivity in the aquaculture agriculture, fisheries and of that region. Such a system will be integrated by the data sources that exist in the country on agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture production, to facilitate the analysis, prediction and decision making in these areas.
It is an electronic database that will integrate information on nutrient content of different products, their energy intake and health benefits of consumers, and content that will enhance production and marketing, as well as preventing and face pests.
It was the National Plan for Science, Technology and Innovation (PNCTI) 2015-2021, which identified the need to develop a platform to centralize databases of agriculture and food sector.
The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Carolina Vásquez, stressed that the purpose of this Information Platform is “to promote the productive, economic and social development of Guanacaste. This will result in benefits not only for the province but for the country, because it will take high-level decisions and make their research reach the rest of the population. ”
As has been reported since the MICITT, “this system will be a useful tool for productivity and competitiveness, which can monitor and improve the various processes performed in producing agricultural producers, such as marketing their products”.
This platform will complement the Regional Wholesale Market Chorotega project, which will begin construction in the coming months and become operational in 2018 and aims to have in the region an efficient system of supply, distribution and marketing.
The National Agricultural Information System focused on the market Chorotega is part of the agreements managed by the Bureau of Research and Innovation and the hub of productive innovation that has worked together with five other tables to find solutions to the various economic, social and environmental problems of Guanacaste.
The actions undertaken by the Working Committee for Research and Innovation Guanacaste are led by the MICITT with technical support from the State University (UNED).
The Bureau of Guanacaste began its work in August 2015 and is scheduled to last working session on 24 June. In their working sessions productive sectors, social and academic organizations, civil society and representatives of state institutions are involved. It was formed by a resolution adopted by the Governing Council of the Republic on July 25, 2015 in Nicoya.
