Colombia: The best coffee crop for nearly five-year period
In 2015 the Colombian coffee growers have obtained a record harvest for 23 years with 14.2 million bags of 60 kilos, according to his national federation. Colombian coffee exports continue to grow and over the past year increased by 16% compared with 2014.
The rise in coffee production in Colombia has been on the increase over the past four years, which increased by 83% from 7.7 million bags in 2012 to 14.2 million bags of 60 kilos in 2015. In December last coffee harvest grew 34% and reached 1.4 million bags, the highest level for the month in 20 years, according to the National Federation of Coffee Growers. The general manager, Roberto Velez Vallejo, said that “these are very good news for the producers of the country.”
Also responsible for the federation said that is the result “of joint work between the growers and the government, who managed to renew the national coffee and put Colombia back as a major player in the international market.”
Exports for the same upward trend
Colombian coffee exports also maintained the pace of growth during 2015 exceeded 12.7 million bags of 60 kilos, up 16% compared with the previous year. In December, exports were 1.2 million bags, 13% more than in the same month last year.
The final production improved slightly government expectations, as the Minister of Agriculture of Colombia, Aurelio Iragorri has indicated that they expected the 2015 coffee harvest shut around 14 million bags.
