Central America: PDRR organization, new member of the World Rural Forum
Two Family Farming organisations, PDRR (Rural Regional Dialogue Programme, Central America) and UPA (Small Farmers’ Union, Spain), both of great importance and representation, have recently become members of the World Rural Forum with the aim of joining forces and actively participating in this international network that works to encourage Family Farming and sustainable rural development.
PDRR (Programa Diálogo Regional Rural) is formed of 21 Central American rural and farming organisations who continue to improve the formulation of policies related to Family Farming in order to favour the processes of social inclusion and economic development for people living in rural areas, through advocacy on different regional bodies such as the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Secretariat of the Central American Agricultural Council (SECAC), as well as on ministers of Agriculture of Central American countries. In addition, PDRR works to strengthen farmers’ organizations and rural organisations in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
Associations that make up the PDRR decided unanimously in their last general assembly held in El Salvador in September 2014 to request membership to the World Rural Forum. Their request has been accepted, and so the PDRR is now a partner to the WRF network.
Small Farmers’ Union (UPA) is a professional organisation, which joins, represents and defends the interests of farming and agricultural professionals across Spain. It brings together the majority of the farming sector: family farms, where they represent mostly small and medium farmers.
UPA has more than 80,000 members across Spain. Professional farmers of all sectors and in most of the regions have in UPA an organisation that represents them at all levels and offers services that require farming operations.
The incorporation of two such important institutions like the UPA and PDRR represents a very positive step for the World Rural Forum as a whole. News that confirms once again the advantage of collaborating with organisations in the rural sector who are in favour of promoting family farming and sustainable rural development around the world.
