Bosch-Valenzuela y Cía collaboration agreement: sensor technology to digitize the Andalusian Agro
Bosch has recently signed a collaboration agreement with Valenzuela y Cía S.A, an agricultural services and supplies company to help producers optimize their crops by searching for the latest applications and world agricultural technology. In this way, Bosch, a leading company in technology and services, has found in agriculture a new field of application for its MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors, in which it expects to bill, up to 2020, nearly one billion euros thanks to the development of solutions based on the Internet of Things (IoT).
Under this agreement, Bosch transfers its experience in automotive sensors to the agriculture sector
Thanks to the signing of this agreement, Valenzuela y Cía, based in Seville, becomes the official distributor of Bosch’s intelligent agriculture solutions in southern Spain. This company has commercial offices in the provinces of Huelva, Córdoba and Seville, as well as technical advisors distributed throughout Andalusia, where it has great experience and reputation.
Through this Association, Bosch aims to be closer to users, agronomists and farmers in the area, as well as complement the portfolio of Valenzuela and Cía products and offer its customers innovative solutions for the monitoring of their fields
German technology for the Andalusian countryside
From now on, producers in the southern area will have closer Bosch Field Monitoring solution, with which they can configure alarms to prevent damage to crops and make better use of water, the most precious resource in Spain.
The system measures in real time the temperature of the wet bulb, the temperature and the relative humidity of the environment and the humidity of the soil. At the moment in which any of these parameters exceeds the limits previously established in the App, a notification will appear on the farmer’s smartphone that will indicate the need to carry out some type of preventive measure. Closing the irrigation system when there is a high level of humidity in the soil, opening the greenhouse before a high relative humidity or turning on sprinkler irrigation in the event of a frost risk, may be some examples of the measures to be taken.
It is a simple to manage and easy to install solution, which aims to help the farmer make better decisions thanks to access to information about the state of the field at any time and in any place.
This system does not require a large investment, since it is a rental of equipment, paying an annual fee for data service. In this way, it is amortized in the first months of its use
A strategic sector of the Andalusian economy
Andalusia is characterized by having a very traditional agricultural sector, where 32 percent of its population is concentrated in rural areas, with agriculture being a key sector in the community. This fact is highlighted in the report “The agricultural and fisheries sector in Andalusia”, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Andalusian Government, in June 2017. The Andalusian agricultural sector represents 28.8 percent of the total Gross Value Added (GVA) at the national level. The community has more than 4.3 million hectares, distributed among the eight provinces, dedicated to agricultural production, highlighting the cultivation of olive groves, with 1.42 million.
The agricultural activity is the main source of employment in half of the Andalusian municipalities, with 7.86 percent of the total in 2015
Aware of the importance of agriculture in Andalusia, that the profitability of farms must be growing and that the only option to increase it is the optimization of resources, and taking into account that the average age of current managers varies between 45 and 65 years old, Bosch’s solution, between traditional agriculture and high technology, becomes ideal.
Since the signing of this agreement and thanks to the help of Valenzuela y Cía, the presence of Bosch through “Field Monitoring” is growing significantly. Customers find in this solution an easy tool to install, use and interpret, making it the perfect complement to Valenzuela’s advisory service. Both companies trust that more and more producers will bet on the use of these tools for the daily management of their farms.
