So far the cherry season is going pretty well in Belgium. Harvesting is progressing well due to the heat of recent weeks, so the demand is greater than supply.
“The interest is enormous, both domestically and abroad,” explains Karel Belmans of BFV (BFV). “I think this has much to do with the fact that less cherries are coming from Turkey and other countries of the south. Belgian supermarkets cherries clearly prefer their own country. ”
For good quality cherries are paid between four and five euros per kilo. “These prices are correct. In other years, for a week maximum supply, prices have fallen because the market can not cope with the immediate offer. That’s not the case this year. ”
Last week began providing BFV KORDIA cherries and now has added Lapins and Regina. “We are offering these three good varieties of cherries and that makes these weeks have peaked offer; now we have two teams sorting the cherries by large volumes “. BFV expects a slightly larger than the volume of last season. “Last year there were many cherries broken by rain. If you keep the good weather, we can collect it all. ”
