Jerome Increase Case founded its agricultural equipment business in 1842 in the US city of Racine, Wisconsin, where Case IH’s global agricultural business headquarters is now in place. In 1869, Case built the first tractor with a steam engine. It is mounted on wheels, but is still pulled by horses and is only used to power other machines. Seven years later he manufactured the first self-propelled traction steam engine. As steam engines began to replace horses for threshing machines, the JI Case Threshing Machine Company became the world’s largest producer of steam engines by 1886.
In 1902, five United States farm equipment companies merged to form the International Harvester Company. Case IH was created in 1985 when J I Case acquired the agricultural division of International Harvester.
