UPA Madrid denounces the defenselessness of the rancher before the attacks of wolf, that grow 1,500% in three years
The Union of Small Farmers (UPA) in Madrid has been concerned about “the alarming lack of control of wildlife” after having access to a report from the Community of Madrid, according to which the number of annual attacks of wolf to cattle has passed from 15 to 251 in just three years, an increase of 1,573.33%. UPA Madrid, has lamented the defenselessness of the cattle rancher in this situation: “these data show that the wolf has returned with force to Madrid and the cattlemen are who are feeding him, when it is we who are in danger of extinction”.
The Ministry‘s document gathers data for the period between January 2012 and November 2016, and shows a “dramatic” increase in the number of attacks on this animal’s livestock, as well as an increase in the size of the victims’ livestock and the geographical expansion of the wolf.
“We can not ignore the problems caused by the wolf, especially the people who live in rural areas, and especially the livestock farmers,” said UPA.
The wolf is a great predator, and as such we can not allow its population to be uncontrolled. “The wolf is a great predator, and as such we can not allow its population to be uncontrolled. Those who advocate that the wolf must be left alone without control fall in the pure demagoguery of urbanite”, have explained
The data show that wolves kill larger animals at a time. While in 2013 more than 94% of their catches were sheep and goats, in 2015 the deaths from sheep and goats were about 85%, with the remaining percentage of deaths being from cows. Finally, in 2016, only 66.5% of the animals killed were sheep and goats and, in addition, the wolves began to dare with equine cattle.
In addition to the increased number of attacks and dead animals, UPA Madrid is also concerned about the geographical expansion of the wolf. “The wolf is conquering territory at great speed”, have assured from the agrarian organization
According to UPA Madrid, among the municipalities affected during 2016 are Alameda del Valle, Aoslos, Braojos; Buitrago de Lozoya, Canencia, Cercedilla, Collado Mediano, Garganta, Garcontilla, Gascones, Guadarrama, Hocajuelo, La Acebeda, La Serna del Monte, Los Molinos, Lozoya, Lozoyuela, Montejo de la Sierra; Moralzarzal, Navarredonda, San Mames, Navas del Marqués, Paredes de Buitrago, Pradena del Rincón, Puebla de la Sierra, Puentes Viejas, Rascafría, Robledondo, Robregordo, Santa María de la Alameda, Somosierra, Villanueva de Lozoya and Villavieja. The organization recalled that this long list contrasts with the only five municipalities that recorded attacks in 2013.
Extensive livestock farming is an economic sector of great importance for these municipalities, they have explained from UPA, and their coexistence with wildlife – not only with the wolf – must be approached as a social problem of the first order, from a global point of view , Considering the benefits it brings to society in matters such as the structuring of the territory, the prevention of fires and the fight against climate change.
