Tejerina renews its position under the challenge of creating more wealth for the rural milieu
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, has renewed her position during the ceremony held on the occasion of her appointment on Monday, November 7th, assuming among her many challenges and commitments the creation of greater wealth For the rural environment.
García Tejerina has stressed that one of the objectives of her Department for the next legislature will be to improve the agrarian income, the benefits of the Industry and the participation of the food sector in the Spanish GDP. In short, to contribute to the generation of greater opportunities and more employment for those who live in the agricultural sector.
In her act of appointment as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, García Tejerina has been accompanied by the President of Congress, Ana Pastor, and the ministers of Justice, Rafael Catalá; Treasury, Cristóbal Montoro; Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, and Employment, Fátima Báñez; As well as of the high positions of the Department, among other personalities.
The Minister thanked the President of the Government for the confidence he has again placed in her and has assured that she will work to live up to the ambitions that the Government has for Spain. She also acknowledged the contribution of all those working in this ministerial department, “thanks to whose work we have been able to get to where we are”.
Commitments made
García Tejerina recalled how thanks to the Government’s efforts in negotiating the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), farmers enjoy peace of mind until 2020. The Minister also pointed out that Spain has gone from having two private oil storage Olive oil to surpass Italy in exports of this product in the United States.
In fisheries, the previous government began the legislature with serious warnings from the European Commission about the way in which this resource was managed, “and five years later Spain is an example of responsible and sustainable fishing, and we have more fishing opportunities and more profitability for Spanish fishermen”.
She also pointed out that in this period, Spain has complied with the Kyoto Protocol I, “and we will comply with Kyoto II, in addition to preparing ourselves to be at the forefront of the fight against climate change worldwide.”
The minister stressed that the legislature began with sanctioning files by the European Commission on water, “and today we have defined all the needs and resources that we need to undertake to ensure the use of water throughout the territory”
Master lines
On the other hand, García Tejerina has announced that she will appear as soon as possible in parliamentary seat to expose the great lines of action of his Department. Among them, the Minister mentioned the COP 22 of Marrakech, to advance “in the most important environmental challenge that humanity has, as is the fight against climate change”. For the Minister, being at the forefront in the fight against climate change and transforming Spain into a low carbon economy will be an essential policy of this Ministry.
Another of the goals that García Tejerina has mentioned is to reach a National Water Pact that derives in the best possible management of this resource. She also assured that there will be advances in the circular economy, in the protection “of our rich natural heritage, and in something as important as that the whole of Spanish society feels involved and responsible for the care of the environment.”
García Tejerina has indicated that this process will begin the process of defining the future CAP, where policies to address climate change will be present
Advancing in agri-food competitiveness
On the other hand, the Minister stressed that the competitiveness of the food sector will have to continue to be improved. In this regard, García Tejerina stressed the significant increase in exports of Spanish food products, which have risen from € 31 billion at the beginning of the last legislature to € 45.5 billion.
However, García Tejerina understands that “we must continue to grow”, and this involves developing all the policies of the last legislature: food chain, quality, structure and organization of sectors, innovation and internationalization.
In this context, the Minister has set the goal of increasing fishing opportunities and improving the profitability of this activity, as well as taking care of fishing resources to ensure activity in the future.
In her opinion, “the work we have ahead is enormous, because our ambitions are enormous for Spain and for Spanish society.” In this task, García Tejerina has been convinced that it will have the support of all sectors, the parliamentary groups and the Autonomous Communities. To all of them, the Minister offered her support and commitment.
