Resilience of the Spanish marine environment, in detail
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has presented the first report on the impact of climate change in the Spanish marine environment introduced by the Director General of the Spanish Office for Climate Change, Valvanera Ulargui, who stressed that the report “is intended provide a better understanding of our marine environment, especially rich and diverse, but vulnerable to climate change. ”
“This report we want to help strengthen the resilience of the Spanish marine environment, to ensure that their supplies continue to provide environmental services, regulations, support and culture to our society,” adds Ulargui
The report is already available on the website of the Ministry
In this view, climate change poses “important challenges for the Spanish marine ecosystem” which will be affected by a number of direct and indirect impacts, “but also presents numerous opportunities”, and this report collects, analyzes and evaluates existing information on the effects of climate change on the marine environment Spanish, contemplating all marine regions ranging from physical and chemical to biological and ecological variables.
“Excellence and rigor”
During the presentation has intervened the report’s author, Diego K. Kersting, as well as some of the other researchers on climate change and marine managers who have contributed to its development.
Valvanera Ulargui, at this point, stressed that the “value of this report lies in the excellence and rigor with which it has developed, and in the broader review process which has been submitted, which has enjoyed the participation of best Spanish experts in the field. ”
National plan for adaptation to climate change
The report “Climate Change in the Spanish marine environment: impacts, vulnerability and adaptation” is part of the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, whose ultimate goal is the integration of adaptation into planning and management of all sectors and areas they are sensitive to climate and therefore vulnerable to climate change.
This work represents a comprehensive analysis of existing knowledge regarding the influence of climate change on the Spanish marine environment physico-chemical and biological both level, focusing on impacts already observed as mass mortalities, changes in abundance and distribution of species, phenological changes , etc.
The report also analyzes what are the most vulnerable species and habitats taking into account long-term projections and proposes various categories of adaptation measures to increase the resilience of our marine environment are.
