Smurfit Kappa expands its global network of recycling plants
Smurfit Kappa, leader of the paper and corrugated cardboard packaging sector, has announced the opening of a recycling plant in Marlia, strategically located in the Italian district responsible for the production of 60% of the corrugated cardboard and 90% of the tissue paper of the country. The company estimates that it will process approximately 15,000 tons of recovered paper annually and expects it to reach 25,000 tons next year.
This Marlia recovery warehouse works closely with the City Hall, supermarkets and local businesses to collect already used paper and cardboard, which in turn are transported to the Smufit Kappa Ania paper mill in Lucca, where they are used as raw material to produce new corrugated cardboard.
Luca Mannori, its General Director, has assured that “we are delighted to have launched this new plant, which is further proof of our constant commitment to sustainable development, as well as an important complement for the region. Paper-based packaging is 100% recyclable. Any corrugated cardboard, compact and cardboard can undergo a transformation process to become a new packaging in less than 14 days, thus demonstrating our true closed circuit approach. ”
Meanwhile, Henri Vermeulen, Vice President of the Recovered Paper division of Smurfit Kappa, added that “paper recovery is a key pillar of the circular economy. As part of the Better Planet Packaging initiative, we are using our long experience in the recycling area to develop even more sustainable packaging solutions. The new Marlia plant will play a significant role, by ensuring the permanent availability of a good amount of recovered paper, enough to meet the demand of all customers in the chain. ”
Smurfit Kappa has long been committed to the implementation of best recycling practices and has a global network of specialists in recycling plants.
