Dragon fruit cultivation in the Mayan area of Quintana Roo has become an economic hope for a dozen rural communities, where from this year will reach 800 hectares.
With an investment of 4 million pesos about 100 farmers more will join the production of the fruit marketed up to $ 3 per unit in foreign countries.
This is a technology package of around 21,000 pesos per hectare to cultivate 200 hectares in the communities of San Ramon, Tihosuco and Tepich in the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
These will join another 600 currently in production, in locations in the area known as the Chunes, confirmed the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (Sedaru).
“We will expand the benefit to the people of Tihosuco and Tepich where traditionally engaged in subsistence maize production, we want to put aside their fields, but it does generate income for their families,” said Nabil Eljure Terrazas Undersecretary of Rural Development Sedaru.
In 2014 the production of dragon fruit in that area of the company generated close to 90 million pesos with an annual production of about 400 tons economic benefit.
One more option to the economy
Sales are made through an installed Oxkutzcab, Yucatan company, which takes almost one hundred percent of production, which is then exported to other countries.
The intention is to seek new markets with better profit margins for farmers Quintana Roo. However, this requires considerably increase the number of tons produced annually.
“The goal is that by the middle of next month to come hectares in that municipiol” said Eljure Terrazas.
