Hundreds of citrus groves and olive trees affected by fire in Bolbaite (Valencia)
The Valencian Farmers Association (AVA-ASAJA) has warned that the fire originated yesterday in Bolbaite, which is spreading to other locations of the Canal de Navarrés and La Ribera Alta, is affecting not only forest areas but also farms bordering the mountains and ravines, which are being reduced to ashes in some areas. According to this organization, the fire has already caused considerable damage to hundreds of fields, mainly citrus, olive, persimmon and other woody crops.
“The farms remain productive and have the soil well kept, clean of weeds, usually act as green firewall, since usually only the first two rows of trees stuck to the wood are burned, thus slowing the progress hitherto unstoppable flames. Instead, this environmental function can’t be played by abandoned fields, which are totally devastated and make easier the fire spread into populated areas, “said the president of AVA-ASAJA, Cristóbal Aguado.
This organization has indicated that in the trees less affected, the fire will cause the loss of harvest next season, and even the next two or three years, but if the intensity and extent of the fire are even greater, fire cause death woodland. AVA-ASAJA reports that farmers who have contracted insurance before the fire broke out have covered the damage resulting from fire in all crops and as an exceptional risk. However, the incident is acquiring alarming proportions and, depending on the final balance of the losses incurred, this association will consider whether to request special subsidies and tax benefits for all farmers affected.
The wind is hampering the work of extinguishing the fire, so it is expected that the number of fields haunted by the flames will increase in the coming hours. At the moment, there are farms with damage in Sumacàrcer, Sellent, Cotes, Càrcer, Estubeny, Anna, Bolbaite and Chella.
